Achieving a preselected set of goals unlocks perks including more health and larger ammo clips. Once the war is won, players can replay battles from the story in score based challenges. Secret environments are littered around each stage with hidden items such as gold, maps and even dream sequences taking place in the original Wolfenstein 3D. Each enhance the gameplay experience and encourage players to deviate their play style and explore their environments. At least the game still looks nice, running on the same engine as last year’s The New Order, but, again, it would have been nice if there was anything to look at in the castle. Wulfburg, by contrast, is full of reds, yellows, golds and browns; an idyllic Bavarian town wracked by an unspeakable horror magic138 rtp later on.
The AI when stealthing around was unfortunately very inconsistent, never noticing a single dead body, or even if they managed to spot you, they’d shoot where they last saw you for a few seconds, and then resume their patrols. It’s hard to say if that’s because they were simple robots, or armored men severely lacking in peripheral vision, but it definitely soured some of the stealth sequences. If you’ve played The New Order, you’ll notice the comparisons almost immediately. In Castle Wolfenstein, heavily armored, bulky Nazis stomp around, having conversations about grammar and their jobs, while you sneak about.
Here Are The Wolfenstein: The Old Blood System Requirements (minimum)
Some new enemies make an appearance too, though they fold so neatly into the ranks of Wolfenstein’s existing army that you’d be hard pressed to tell them apart from the soldiers you’re used to fighting. There’s a new challenge mode too, that locks you into a room from the main campaign and pits you against waves of these enemies, awarding you points for successful and stylish murderising. Visually it is in line with what we had before, and the sound effects and audio work their charm especially when Blazkowicz tries to speak German. But the problem is that while The New Order had all this ‘new’ stuff and well-designed mission locals, The Old Blood cuts back to the good old Zombie horde stigma. I had hoped Wolfenstein to be above this silly Nazizombie craze that for some remarkable reason stays popular way beyond its expiry date. More was expected of the developers in that regard because they have shown that they are well able to come up with their own stuff – well, you can make the argument that killed soldiers instantly turning into zombies was somewhat of an innovation but really, no.
Whereas the sets of the The New Order were fashioned entirely form concrete to the point where all sense of place blurs (Berlin and London are almost indistinguishable), The Old Blood is all medieval buildings among the snowy Alps. In the opening scene, as Wesley drives, you look up at the Castle looming over a small village, held between two mountains. A lot of cut scenes consist of rowing down rivers with mountains cutting into sky above you. Kessler’s hideout is a cave that wouldn’t look out of place in Dear Esther.

And when you are busy shooting the shit out of stuff, The Old Blood plays like a dream, and there’s a smoothness to the mechanics that I genuinely loved. I honestly can’t remember encountering any stuttering, frame-rate issues or glitches and – other than one Nazi dying in mid-air and staying there – my experience was exceptional. Even with waves of enemies descending on me, and whilst letting rip with two automatic weapons simultaneously, I breezed through the game in a silky, dreamy fashion.
Whereas The Old Blood just has the most generic video game fight imaginable. Big, immobile monster with glowing weak spot that you shoot while dodging its attacks. Should you get bored of the roughly five-hour story, there are plenty of secret areas to uncover, some of which will even transport Blazcowicz into a level straight out of Wolfenstein 3D, pixelated sprites and all. There’s also an arcade-like mode which transforms levels into self-contained shooting arenas, challenging you to score as many points as possible. It’s a lot of content packed into a nice little package, even if the main experience is smaller and more streamlined than its predecessor. This final boss fight feels all the more dodgy considering the battle that closes the first half of The Old Blood, presenting a bit of a twist on the Super Soldier encounters you’ve had up until that point, is really well executed.
